Today, Belize City today is home to about 35% of the country's population and remains the commercial capital of the country though the official capital was moved to Belmopan in the interior in 1971.

On arrival at Pecarry Park Adventure Center, your experienced guides will brief you on safety procedures for ATV handling, outline the route to be taken and issue protective gear and helmets.

Then you'll explore the jungles of Belize on trails laid out over 100 years ago by loggers in search of precious mahogany trees.

The trails are a good mix of various levels of challenging terrain, leading to the stop of the day - the Maya Caves. These sacred places were used for important ceremonies conducted to appease the gods of the underworld. As you explore the caves, be on the look out for ancient ceramic pots, lying forgotten for centuries.

On your return through the jungle, keep your eye out for various plants and animals you might be lucky enough to glimpse!

Discover ancient Mayan architecture on an excursion through Belize's exotic landscapes. You'll enjoy stunning views and spot diverse wildlife as you make your way to the Lamanai ruins, one of the most famous sights in Belize. Accessible only by water and a brief hike, this adventure is fun for the whole family.

A 45-minute drive up the Northern Highway, passing through villages and lowlands with many bird species, brings you to Tower Hill, where you'll board a riverboat and head up the New River.

While traversing the many creeks and lagoons, you may spot birdlife including hawks, kites and falcons. The river is lined with hardwood trees, orchids and bromeliads, and you might see dainty wading birds called jacanas lightly walking on lily pads while elusive crocodiles bask in the morning sunlight.

At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai (Mayan for submerged crocodile) rise into view. Once at the site you'll tour the small museum which features many ancient relics found at Lamanai.

You'll then embark on a 1.5-mile (2.5km) jungle hike to visit the Temple of the Mask, one of the tallest Mayan pyramids; the stucco mask of the Sun God "Kinich Ahau"; an elaborate carved stellae; and the Temple of the Jaguar Masks. These impressive sites appear to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of birds and the haunting call of the howler monkeys.

Your guide will point out the copal and ramon trees, which were of great importance in ancient times. For the jungle hike you will need insect repellent and sturdy walking shoes.

At the end of the tour you'll have lunch under thatched palapas near the lagoon's edge. After lunch, free time is available for more sightseeing in the rainforest.

Departing Belize City, you'll travel along the scenic Western Highway enroute to the Cayo District and the impressive Mayan site of Xunantunich. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, you are hand-cranked across the Mopan River by a 19-century ferry.

"El Castillo" (the castle) is the largest temple at Xunantunich and shows its dominance by its towering height. From the top of "El Castillo" you'll have panoramic vistas of the surrounding rainforests in the Cayo District, as well as the bordering towns between Belize and Guatemala.

After a hot lunch at a Cayo-area restaurant, you'll head back toward Belize City. Along the way you will make a stop at the Belize Zoo, created as a sanctuary for the country's indigenous species.

The Belize Zoo was initially intended for animals which were injured or donated to the facility and could not be returned to the wild. The zoo is now home to an impressive array of large cats, primates, reptiles and birds. You'll have the opportunity to view Belize's prolific wildlife in one location.

Then, at the entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system, your guide will hand out flash lights and you are ready to float through the cave system in your inner tube assisted by the water's gentle currents.
