Air Helicopter and Balloon Tours Specialty Plane Tour

Fun seekers, this biplane air tour is for you! One or two passengers sit in the front cockpit of a beautiful 1920's biplane, while the pilot flies from the rear cockpit. This is aviation like it used to be. Fly low and slow over beaches, downtown San Diego and Coronado, and inland San Diego County, or make up your own route!

Each flight can be more thrilling than a roller-coaster or as gentle as you like...you decide!  Book for 2 and bring a friend along and share the fun. Choose from among five tour options (see 'Itinerary' below). Don't miss out on this amazing experience!

Pick the Sunset Special and watch one a spectacular Southern California sunsets - you might even see a green flash. For extra fun, book two biplanes and four people can enjoy a flight together. Or fly alone, with a pilot of course (same price for one or two passengers), and you can take the controls and do some of the flying, no pilot's license required. If you haven't flown an open cockpit biplane you haven't flown!

One of the biplanes, NC3242, was originally built in May of 1927, the same month that Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic and it was used to carry airmail. The other, NC674H, was built in November of 1929, right before the 1930 "St. Valentine's Day Massacre." It was owned by a detective agency in Chicago that used it to transport a gangster-sniffing bloodhound. The third biplane, NC4418, was added two the fleet last year. It has been totally restored. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor!

Please note: If you would like a separate plane for each person, please make individual bookings for each party. Any 2 passengers on the same booking will share a plane.

Have you ever wondered what all those buttons, dials and switches in a cockpit are for? Or what actually makes an aircraft fly? How many times have you seen airplanes soaring in the sky and wished you could play in the clouds, too? For all those who have ever dreamed of flying, or wanted to give someone else the opportunity, you've landed at the right spot.

After a pre-flight briefing during which you'll discuss the basics of what makes an airplane fly, you'll climb aboard one of the Varga VG-21s (the same aircraft used for our Top Dog Air Combat flights) for a brief cockpit orientation, and then take to the skies. No previous experience is necessary, but you probably will be able to do the first take off yourself under the watchful eye of an experienced FAA certified pilot, of course. Then learn how to maneuver the aircraft through turns, climbs, and glides, and fly the aircraft back to the airport. It's a great way to start someone's career or even change their life.

So if you're ready to share the skies with the likes of the Wright brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong, order the Discovery Flight and let's go fly!

Be treated to aerobatic G-Forces, experience neck- numbing, adrenaline-inducing roller coaster of thrills 2000ft in the air above Sydney as your pilot gives you a taste of the G-Forces Baron Manfred Von Richtoffen himself may have experienced during air combat.

Upon arrival at Bankstown airport, you will climb into a flight suit and prepare to board. You'll be able to hear all the calls to air traffic control and speak to your pilot through the intercom.

Once airborne head west towards the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. Over St Mary's in the designated training area- you'll climb to 3500ft-4000ft. You'll start with some basic maneuvers like loops, barrel rolls, wingovers and hammer head turns to get the feel of things. Your pilot may also treat you to some inverted flight flying upside down and to a hesitation roll, a four point roll where you pause and fly straight ahead at each quarter turn. Your pilot will explain each maneuver as you go through it.

Once you're comfortable with the basics you'll move onto some combination maneuvers; things like a Roll Off The Top, a half loop followed by a half roll and a Split S, the reverse of the Roll off the Top a half roll followed by a half loop. This may be followed by Cuban Eights and reverse Cuban Eights, which are three-dimensional figure eights. You'll experience G forces of anywhere between +6G and -3G, alternatively being pushed into your seat or pulled hard against your harness.

After a couple of spins to shake things out your pilot will put all these elements together into an adrenaline inducing sequence of the type used in competition, and while aerobatic maneuvers are all fun and games today don't forget they developed out of the serious business of WWI, where fighter pilots like Baron Von Richtoffen and other flying aces performed these complicated aerial moves to avoid being shot down in deadly dog fights.

Experience a unique view of the lush, eucalypt filled Blue Mountains from the front seat of this adrenaline inducing, open-cockpit bi-plane. Wave at the Three Sisters, soar over the Skyway and breath in the heady scent of the dense forest as you fly over the magnificent Burragorang Valley.

Upon your arrival at Bankstown airport, you will climb into a flight-suit and prepare to board. Your pilot will strap you securely into the open-air cockpit of the Pitts Special S2A aerobatic bi-plane and fasten your headphones and flight helmet. There will be plenty of time for your family and friends to take photographs of you as you prepare for your flight. When you are secure, your pilot will prepare the plane for take off. You will be able to hear all the calls to air traffic control and speak to your pilot through the intercom.

Once airborne you'll head west towards the Blue Mountains, dropping low over Warragamba Dam and into the Burragorang Valley- Australia's answer to the Grand Canyon. Flying 500ft above the level of the water, and below the top of the magnificent escarpments, you'll experience a unique view of the lush, eucalypt covered landscape of the Great Dividing Range. Circling over Mt Beloon and the mouth of the Tonalli River you'll head back up the valley to Katoomba and do a fly past of the Three Sisters.

As you head back towards Bankstown you'll have the chance to pull out all stops with some adrenaline inducing aerobatics; try a loop and a roll to give you a view of the world from a completely different perspective. This is what the Pitts is made for and your pilot will give you a taste of the G-Forces Baron Manfred Von Richtoffen himself may have experienced during air combat.

Landing back at Bankstown you'll be hard pressed to stop smiling for the rest of the day and we hope it is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

Note: The Pitts S2A bi plane was designed by Curtis Pitts in 1949. They are single passenger aircrafts where the pilot sits behind the passenger.
